Pastoral Care & Member Wellbeing

A Church Prepared to Care for the People God Entrusts to Us

Welcome to HMCA Pastoral Care

At House of Mercy Christian Assembly (HMCA), we believe that church is more than a place people attend on Sundays. It is a spiritual family where people should be able to encounter Jesus Christ, grow in faith, receive prayer and pastoral support, develop their gifts and walk towards God's purpose for their lives.

Our vision is to build a Christ-centred, Spirit-filled, safe, caring, accountable and discipling church where every person is treated with dignity, compassion and respect.

Our Pastoral Care Promise

When you become part of HMCA, we recognise that you may entrust the church with important parts of your spiritual journey, family life, questions, struggles, relationships, hopes, gifts and calling.

That creates a pastoral responsibility.

We therefore seek to provide a structured system of pastoral care so that care does not depend solely upon the availability of one pastor.

Our Five-Pillar Pastoral Care Model

Five connected pillars working together so that every member is known, cared for and helped to grow.

1

Pastoral Care & Membership

We want everyone to understand how HMCA provides pastoral care before they need it.

Members are introduced to HMCA's vision, beliefs, leadership, discipleship, safeguarding arrangements and pastoral-care pathway.

HMCA seeks to provide members with biblical teaching, prayer, spiritual guidance, fellowship, appropriate practical support, safeguarding and referrals to specialist services where necessary.

2

A Safe & Caring Church

We are committed to cultivating a church environment characterised by:

  • Safety
  • Dignity
  • Trust
  • Respect
  • Accountability
  • Appropriate Boundaries
  • Compassion

People sometimes arrive at church carrying painful experiences. We want HMCA to be a community where people can be:

  • discipled without being humiliated,
  • corrected without being abused,
  • challenged without being controlled, and
  • loved without being manipulated.
3

Listening & Member Development

Pastoral care isn't only about helping when something goes wrong. We also want to know:

How can HMCA help you become who God has called you to be?

Our pastoral and discipleship journey therefore considers your story, spiritual development, goals, challenges, skills, gifts and calling.

4

Caring for Our Pastoral Team

People who care for others also need care.

Through HMCA Pastoral Wellness 360, we encourage appropriate attention to the spiritual, emotional, physical, relational and ministry wellbeing of our pastors and pastoral workers.

5

Pastoral Accountability & Support

HMCA believes Christian leaders should not minister in isolation.

Pastoral leaders need prayer, fellowship, accountability, appropriate rest, mentoring and, where necessary, professional support. Our pastoral peer-support arrangements help create that environment.

Your Pastoral Care Pathway

Care is shared across a team, so support is available at the right level for your need.

The church provides pastoral ministry; it does not pretend to be every specialist service.

Pastors can listen, pray, encourage, disciple and signpost. Where appropriate, a person may be encouraged to seek qualified medical, mental-health, safeguarding, legal, domestic-abuse, addiction, social-care or other professional support.

We seek first to understand what is happening rather than immediately making assumptions.

Depending upon the circumstances, we determine whether the need is primarily pastoral, spiritual, practical, safeguarding-related, medical, psychological, financial, legal or relational. Appropriate pastoral support, prayer, referral and follow-up can then be provided.

Confidentiality & Safeguarding

We treat pastoral conversations with dignity, sensitivity and appropriate confidentiality.

However, confidentiality has limits. Information may need to be shared appropriately where there are serious safeguarding concerns, abuse, significant threats to someone's safety, or circumstances where intervention or reporting is legally required.

HMCA Pastoral Care Declaration

At HMCA, we recognise that every person who comes through our doors is created in the image of God and worthy of dignity, respect and compassionate care.

We are committed to building a church where people can encounter Jesus Christ, hear God's Word, experience genuine Christian fellowship, receive appropriate pastoral care, develop spiritually, discover their gifts and grow into God's purposes for their lives.

We recognise the boundaries of pastoral ministry. We do not seek to replace qualified medical, psychological, legal or social services. Where specialist support is required, we will encourage appropriate referral while continuing suitable pastoral support and prayer.

We will protect the vulnerable, maintain appropriate boundaries, listen before assuming, pray before reacting and pursue holiness, truth, love and accountability.
